How to Get the Most Cash for Your Scrap Metal

Scrapping can be lucrative if you know what you're doing. Whether you're a contractor with leftover materials or a homeowner cleaning out the garage, understanding how scrap yards value metal makes a huge difference in your payout. Here are expert strategies to maximize your return.

1. Separate Ferrous from Non-Ferrous

The golden rule of scrapping is the magnet test.

  • Ferrous Metals (Magnetic): Steel and iron. These are common but worth less per pound.
  • Non-Ferrous Metals (Non-Magnetic): Copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel. These are much more valuable.

If you mix them together, the yard will likely pay you the lower "shred" price for the whole pile. Separating your copper wire from your steel pipe ensures you get paid the premium rate for the copper.

2. "Clean" Your Metal

Yards have two prices: "Clean" and "Dirty."
Dirty: Metal with plastic, wood, rubber, or other metals attached. (e.g., copper wire with insulation, aluminum window frames with glass or steel screws).
Clean: Pure metal with no contaminants.

Taking the time to strip insulation off copper wire or remove steel screws from aluminum siding can double or triple your payout.

3. Know Your Grades

Not all copper is created equal. "#1 Copper" (clean, unalloyed wire/tubing) pays more than "#2 Copper" (oxidized or with solder). Understanding these grades prevents yards from downgrading your material.

4. Quantity Matters

Scrap yards prefer bulk. Processing one pound takes as much paperwork as processing 500 pounds. If you have the space, save up your scrap until you have a truckload. Some yards offer tiered pricing for larger quantities.

5. Watch the Market

Scrap prices fluctuate daily based on global supply and demand. Like the stock market, prices can dip and spike. If you have non-ferrous metals like copper or brass, it might be worth checking market trends (apps like iScrap are helpful) and waiting for a price jump before selling.
